Greenwich Dance will be out on the road this Spring with a performance called Showtime! touring to five community centres around the borough in a programme which brings dance right up YOUR street!
Designed to bring people of all ages together for a fun afternoon or evening out, Showtime! offers a line-up of bite-sized dance, comedy and music from a range of preofessional and community artists in a relaxed and familiar setting where eating and drinking is encouraged!
Showtime! will be coming to New Charlton Community Centre on the 27th March and will be at Clockhouse Community Centre on the 28th March with two shows, a matinee and an evening performance. We then shoot over to Middle Park for two shows on the 4 April, pop over to Abbey Wood on Wednesday 8th April for anotehr family matinee and evening performance and finish the tour at the glorious Shrewsbury House on the 9th April.
Greenwich Dance want everyone to feel welcome and recognise that those who live alone or whose friends are busy could feel excluded. To avoid that we will have a group of Dancing Friends at every event, easily recogniseable in yellow tshirts, and there to make anyone arriving alone feel warmly welcomed.
"These events are designed for local people to come together and have a really fun afternoon or evening out in a setting that feels like home. Its important that people feel that theres someone to talk to, so our Dancing Friends are going ot be so important to the whole concept of the event." says CEO Melanie Precious.
Up My Street! is a programme Greenwich Dance are being funded to deliver by Royal Borough of Greenwich, Foyle Foundation and Arts Council England. It will see us returning to community centres twice a year with similar, socially driven dance-inspired events.
"We can't wait to meet people, find out what they like and dislike and introduce them to some of our Artistic Family as well as our youth and Over 55's group." says Chenube-Ruth Bailey, who is coordinating the events. "Showtime! will give us an opportunity to meet groups that are already dancing in the area as we have a couple of slots free for guests in the running order. I'll be out and about over the next coming weeks meeting potential perfomers and discovering hidden talent across the borough. It's such a privilege to meet groups like this and find out about the creativity we have here in Greenwich."
We are also really excited about the professional artists we are bringing on the tour with us this season. ZoieLogic Dance Theatre will be back later in the year with their incredible production Sleuth, so this is a gret opportunity for audiences to get a taste of what the company is all about: Theatricality. Fun. Humour all flavoured by film noir!
Mathieu Geffré of Rendezvous Dance will be bringing his piece What Songs May Do - a duet we programmed as part of our wine tasting fundraiser in November last year which was recieved so enthusiastically! Its beautiful - technically brilliant but also moving, touching and romantic.
And then we also have Grounded Movement and the incredible Temujin Gill who some may recognise from his credit as choreographer of the NHS section of the London 2012 Opening Ceremony. Tem will be bringing an excerpt of his new show Ragtime to Grime and will also be back again later in the year .....as October's Showtime! will be his brainchild...(he is busy curating an evening of music, food and dance as we write.)
Its not to be missed, great value and an opportunity to try something new without hurting the pocket. But there are not many tickets available at ecah venue as they are all fairly intimate spaces, so book early to avoid disappointment!
See you there!
