Professional Class: Joseph Toonga
Joseph Toonga's classes involve looking at tension within the body alongside isolation and intention with movements. The class is fast paced and physically challenging, using elements of hip-hop (popping) to harness the essence of the style to further investigate it in a contemporary context.
Unfortunately Marie Chabert is unable to teach this week as previously advertised. Many thanks to Joseph Toonga for stepping in at short notice.

Joseph Toonga originates from Cameroon but was raised in the East End of London. As an artist Joseph is fascinated with the rawness, compactness and precision that Hip-Hop provides and how he can fuse it with the shaping and structure more commonly used in contemporary choreography. He aims to create a unique vocabulary, whilst incorporating storytelling and narrative to his work to explore and physicalise emotive themes relevant in today's society.
Through Just Us Dance Theatre Joseph has established two mentoring programmes (Let’s Shine Mentorship and New&Notable) to support and provide the tools and opportunities for young emerging Hip-Hop dance theatre artists to achieve their goals.
Joseph has also been commissioned to make-work for companies including German National Youth Ballet, Richard Alston Dance Company, Edge Postgraduate Company, Middlesex University, Codarts School and ‘Intoto’ (London Studio Centre).
He has also won festivals in both the EU and USA and has also performed in Italy, France, Holland, USA, Canary Islands and around the UK. As well as creating work that has a unique expressive style and is relatable to the masses, as an artist Joseph is very passionate about impacting the youth of today through dance.
