Workshop: THIS BRIGHT FIELD with Theo Clinkard
Choreographer, performer and stage designer, Theo Clinkard, will lead a workshop that draws upon his his body of choreographic work and provide an insight into the creative process behind This Bright Field, his new company work for 12 dancers, which comes to Laban Theatre on 28th October. Theo’s practice centres around the communicative potential of the body and the empathetic nature of dance in performance. This Bright Field, follows his recent commissions for Tanztheatre Wuppertal Pina Bausch and Danza Contemporanea de Cuba.
10.30pm -12.30 pm CLASS
Theo’s class begins with simple exercises that aim to develop awareness and connection within the body, alongside perception games that explore participants relationship to themselves, to each other and to the space they inhabit. Through a balance of improvised movement generation and learnt movement patterns his class is then devised to challenge coordination and help participants find greater clarity in articulation. His class finishes up with phrase work that encourages playful, present and expansive dancing.
1.30pm - 5.30pm WORKSHOP
Following class, Theo will lead a session where participants are invited to explore, observe and discuss some of the ideas that lie at the heart of his current work, This Bright Field.
The production uses distinct shifts in perspective to consider private and public spaces, togetherness and empowerment and Theo will share some of the creative tasks and improvisations the company developed in the devising process. He will be exploring the use of the senses in pairs and in larger groups, inviting participants to consider framing and the experience of the viewer before finally leaving space for the group to constructively discuss what they witness. Theo will ensure an empowering atmosphere is created to enable all participants to flourish and make available various universal techniques and ideas that can enrich participants own practises, whether they are performers, dance makers or teachers.
