Meet up at The Bandstand in Greenwich Park for a dusk-time event for 14 – 25 year olds. Join us for Born to Protest – a performance by Just Us Dance Theatre. Choreographer Joseph Toonga aims to dismantle presumptions about the black male and female figure based on intimidation and isolation, revealing instead character traits around fragility, vulnerability and a constant battle to prove oneself.

The hypersensitivity of the black body in space is magnified by Born to Protest’s cast of seven performing en masse to a soundscape which sets up an intense energy with hip hop beats and voice over.

Just Us Dance Theatre will also lead workshops on the day so you can find out more about their technique and learn some of their skills.

We then turn the stage over to compare Andre Bright, an esteemed local artist, dancer and choreographer, who will introduce our community performers.

Lotus Youth Dance Company, our performance company for 13 – 19 year olds led by Colleen Joseph, will also perform their unique blend of hip hop, street styles and contemporary.

Thamesmead based Dynamix Dancers are known for providing regular classes to young people in Bexley and Greenwich.

What to expect

Our Summer in the Park performances are intended to be social gatherings with entertainment suitable for all of the family. They are relaxed and informal, you do not need a ticket and will not be expected to be quiet or be seated.

Wet Weather

This event takes place outdoors and as we can’t rely on the British weather to be kind to us all of the time, we suggest following us on Twitter or Facebook to find out the latest news on our wet weather plans.

Facilities

There are a number of toilet blocks in the park including accessible toilets. Both the Pavilion Tea Rooms and White House Café will be open for refreshments.
